AMMACHI Labs at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has been busy preparing Amrita Vidyalayam School students for several international #robotics competitions. The Second Foundation’s most recent 21st Century skills training was through #AtalTinkeringLabs. This year, two teams from Amrita Vidyalayam Thalassery and three teams from Amrita Vidyalayam, Puthiyakavu racked up nearly 150 hours of training for the #WorldRoboticsOlympiad 2018. Out of the 15 teams that participated in #WRO India Regionals Championship in Trivandrum, the Starlite Warriors team from Amrita Vidyalayam Thalassery has qualified for the national championship to be held in Ahmedabad on September 16, 2018. In Guntur district, addressing public grievances is the highest priority of district administration and they organize public interface programmes like “Mee Kosam” every Monday. Guntur has topped in Andhra Pradesh for citizen satisfaction, good governance and implementation of e-office systems. Yesterday, our deployment team met with Shri. Kona Sasidhar, District Collector at the Zila Parishad office during the public interface program. DC directed our team members to meet with R.S.Ganga Bhavani, District Educational Officer, Shri. Sai Babu, Project Officer, District Rural Development, Shri. Satya Narayana, and Smt. Gowri Naidu, Human Development Officer. The DEO and the Project Officer promised to give the school uniform orders of the next academic year to our tailoring students in Gudipadu Cheruva Village. Shri. Satyanarayana ensured that the remaining 63 toilets for the village will be sanctioned and offered support to get approval for community toilet and cattle turf(water tank for cattle). The DRDA and the HDO talked about possible #incomegeneration activities and available government schemes. Later on, the officers introduced Shri. Ravi, Assistant Project Manager, and Shri. Saidulu, Human Development Community Co-ordinator of that mandal.

The Stanford University’s 2018 FabLearn Global Excellence Practitioner Award has been awarded to Akshay Nagarajan of AMMACHI Labs, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, in recognition of his achievements and efforts to advance maker education and for his exemplary commitment to outreach, connecting communities and bringing equity to education in the rural communities in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. Akshay Nagarajan’s research at AMMACHI Labs focuses on #MakerEducation for Children and he also manages the #2ndFoundation #Makerspace at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham that encourages children to problem solve and connect solutions to real-world issues that affect them. AMMACHI Labs team reached Andhra Pradesh Tribal Education Primary Gurukul school last Wednesday to spread awareness about #hygiene,#cleanliness, and #sanitation. Our community organizer Anuradha and deployment team interacted with the students and did a practical session on hand washing. #CO taught the students that washing hands properly can help prevent the spread of the germs (like bacteria and viruses) that cause infectious diseases. World Population Day, a United Nations’ initiative celebrated on the 11th of July every year. This day seeks to focus attention on the importance of spreading awareness about the exploding world population and the importance of reproductive health. This year the theme is “Family Planning is a Human Right”. In Malegaon village(Chattisgarh), our community organizer and assistant facilitator celebrated #WorldPopulationDay at primary health center with women from the village. Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, meant to provide LPG connections to eight crores rural women by 2020. This ambitious Rs 8,000 crore scheme will partly be funded using the money saved from 1.13 crore cooking gas users voluntarily giving up their subsidies through PM’s ‘Give It Up’ initiative. To organize #UjjwalaYojana campaign in Kodur village, AMMACHI Labs team met with the District Magistrate/Collector Dr. Vasam and District Supply Officer. The officer guided us to approach key personnel of oil companies and the very next day we could organize LPG Panchayat under Ujjwala Yojana at Kodur. Villagers enthusiastically approached to know more to avail the scheme. A detailed report was published in the well-circulated “Enadu” new paper on the 7th July, 2018. Educating school children on basic #hygiene and #sanitation is very important as they are in a good position to drive change in their families and communities. In the rural villages in India, especially women and children, are being trained by AMMACHI Labs to improve their #health and #wellbeing. Specifically, the focus is on improving access to safe drinking water and hygiene practices in daily life. To tackle the problems caused by bad hygiene &sanitation and a lack of health awareness, AMMACHI Labs’ deployment team is training the village people to learn how to protect themselves. In Malegaon village (Chattisgarh), AMMACHI Labs’ community organizer and assistant facilitator conducted an awareness session on the topic “spreading of disease”. Attendees were upper primary school children in the village school and they had a practical session on hand washing techniques too. Students were taught “how to use a handkerchief”. We also had an interactive session where we discussed “prevention and cure of diseases” and “health and hygiene.’

The core philosophy behind #CommunityDevelopment programme is the overall development of rural villages and people’s participation. In India, CDP was formulated to provide an administrative framework through which the government can reach to the district, tehsil/taluka and village level. In every district, a “Block Development Officer (BDO)” looks after the community development programs. AMMACHI Labs team initiated a community development program in Dewgain village, Jharkhand on 6 July 2018. Shri. Gauri Shankar Sharma, BDO, Smt. Aarti, President of Child Welfare committee, Shri. Bada, Agricultural officer, Panchayat Samiti Member and the government doctor from the village attended the program. Hundreds of villagers attended the program and listened to the informative classes on village development and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act).
