Ayyappan A. presented his paper at the 2018 IEEE’s 3rd International Conference for Convergence in Technology, Gateway Hotel Hinjawadi Pune. The paper titled “Design of Hybrid Powered Automated Compressed Stabilized Earth Block (CSEB) Machine” was also coauthored by Sekhar Milan, Vipina Valsan, Sreejith Kailas T, P Kanakasabapathy. Ayyappan is on the Haptics team at AMMACHI Lab that innovates technology solutions for rural issues. This paper focuses on the design for an eco-friendly brick making machine that uses solar energy to mix and create bricks. The machine could potentially alleviate the drudgery of manual brick making and could automate the process for laborers. AMMACHI Labs teaches women to build toilets in rural India, and such a design if ever manufactured, could potentially help rural women produce bricks locally for lower cost and without heavy manual labor. “I really enjoy the work here at AMMACHI Labs because it is a good balance of MTECH and Research, all for social good.”

Gainful Employment to AMMACHI Labs’ Sanitation Change Ambassadors!
Last September, our Allahabad village Sarai Nooruddin had achieved #ODF feat, with community’s participation. Around same time, we nominated 21 village youth for Government’s #CLTS (Community led total sanitation) training including our CO & Facilitator. Today all of them are employed and engaged in triggering behavioural change in other villages of the district through role pay, rally, presentations and series of other interventions during their field visit).
They get paid an avg. 6000-8000/month for 3-4 hours field visit, in addition to food and accommodation at site. While earning they can keep up with their studies/vocation also. Majority are girls and we are pleasantly surprised none dropped out and are actively involved. Earlier they did triggering exercise in and around the villages near the Ganges (during Kumbh Mela in Jan/Feb). Now this work seems for 6-7 months. It is heard, after this government plans to scale up by hiring them to capture data, analysis, making performance reports of villages/district. Since majority of these youth are our computer students, they stand a good chance.

Illuminating Guptapada village in Odisha
It’s been over 11 days, our adopted village has no electric supply. It’s like dark days for them and life almost comes to standstill as soon sun sets, disrupting many of their daily activities. Children are not able to study properly in these exam days, the drinkable water supply stopped forcing them to intake from contaminated sources, and cannot charge phones.
We were told the previous week villagers had gone to electricity office and Panchayat to enquire the reason and were informed their transformer damaged (burnt) and that it will be rectified only when outstanding dues of all consumers are paid in full. Since it was a huge amount for each one, they were clueless on what to do.
We reached the village on 23rd Feb’18 and spoken to few #SHG women and found there were more issues and the electricity situation in the village had been highly erratic in the past too.
Women told there’s no proper metering system at many houses, bill does not come monthly, collection officer comes once in 4 months, few BPL family ends up paying INR 400 per month due to wrong meter reading (even if they have just two bulbs in a two room house).
Looking at the long standing problem, when we asked women to come to meet Sarpanch at Panchayath alongwith our #CO, few agreed. Upon calling Sarpanch, he quickly came to meet us at our center. According to him, 9 families out of 33 had no dues outstanding. So we requested it is not proper to cut electricity of the entire village. Our CO also mentioned the water issue and student’s difficulties due to lack of electricity.
On the third day, we along with our community organizer Urmila and AServe Coordinator Asith, went and met the area JE, of FEDCO (franchisee of governmentt electricity board). He showed us a huge bill per person in village accumulated for many months running upto 20k. We tried to reason with him how villagers will pay this and why didn’t it was a monthly effort etc.
Our next destination then was district divisional office, we met the head person Mr Manoj, by designation the AGM & Executive Engineer, CESU(Government Electricity Board). He heard the concerns and was of great assistance. He immediately called relevant offices and ordered installation of a new transformer with immediate effect. And connected our CO to that department. This divisional head also assured to reassess all outstanding and will apply waiver to possible extent.
Then we discussed strategies by which this overdue condition does not happen again. He called area collection officer and instructed for future and to solve the other hanging issues. He seeked help from us in recovering some marginal amount from villagers. He was impressed to hear that our community organizer will initiate it and will conduct awareness campaign at village for timely payment and in bringing problematic issues to notice. Our CO who spoke assertively at all offices, plans to conduct a ‘gram sabha’ (community meeting) where these officials will be invited. He also agreed to our suggestion that field officers must seek the opinion of villagers and both parties should collectively solve the issues.
Now electricity is back in Guptapada village!!!

Women Leaders Inspire Future Generations on International Women’s Day.
On International Women’s Day our ten women #COs in #Odisha who are training at the #TTT train-the-trainer program shared their social empowerment experiences with the young boys girls enrolled for skill courses at Aditya Birla Group Skills Foundation A few days before, the central manager of the foundation was so impressed by the confidence of our women, that he requested our COs to share their expertise through an interactive, motivational session. The COs happily agreed and gave inspiring speeches to the students about how the #WE:CSDP (Women Empowerment Community Sanitation Through Democratic Participation) project transformed their lives and their communities. They also encouraged the youth by sharing their personal stories of success, that even with little or no education, these strong rural women transcended social and economic barriers to achieve great success. India’s youth must then rise up and use education as the most powerful tool to change the world. Our women stressed the importance of the younger generation to study well and work diligently towards contributing to society. The youth applauded the session and were so inspired, that many approached the COs after to learn more about how they too can take step towards positive change. The women COs were also touched to share their successes of becoming true #ChampionsofChange. Today is International Women’s Day, dedicated to celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women all over the globe. Today also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity and reminds us that much work is still needed in the area of gender equality. International Women’s Day is not just another “greeting card” holiday to celebrate friends and family, it is a day to motivate and unite friends, colleagues and whole communities to think, act and be gender inclusive. We at AMMACHI Labs & the Center for Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equality salute all women and men who are striving to make gender equality a reality.

During our last visit we had noticed Alcoholism as a major problem in the Kalinagar village at West Bengal (many were making liquor, as a source of living too). However, this time we got to know that many of the illicit liquor suppliers were forced to stop & liquor consumption reduced by 95%. This was due to frequent inspection by an excise inspector Mr Biswajit. So we met this SI to applaud his efforts who is doing this service in this locality for past 3 months. He said he is honestly implementing the “zero illicit liquor” rule. We could see his sincerity as, for 7 youth of this village whose liquor shops were closed he provided gainful employment in near by private companies. He is doing the same in near by villages too. He showed us bonds and video clips obtained from the illegal suppliers and family members of them confessing never to indulge again.
AMMACHI Labs deployment team suggested that it would be great if his team conducts an awareness session on the ill effects of alcoholism as a sustainable effort to curb this social issue. To our pleasant surprise he was happy with the idea & immediately agreed to do it in March.

In bringing social transformation at Kalinagar village West Bengal, through community engagement, we conducted a mass awareness program yesterday with 50 women in attendance. They were mostly #SHG members & change agents, they were initially apprised of their role as change models. Later on, our team shared success stories of women from other villages.
After initial inspiration, next we showed them a video with social message and then the floor was open for anyone to come and speak about it. We could see women leaders emerging.Having thus created a fertile ground for interactions, we asked them to name 4-5 most pressing problems. They were grouped into 4 groups and each group had to choose one problem and suggest any solutions they could possibly imagine. What followed was a good presentation, we formed 4 task groups (with a leader and a second in command with 8 to 10 members), for solving drinking water problem, road building, perusing for 100% ODF, pension issue. These groups will now work with our Community Organizer in putting efforts to solve issues they took up, thus building community ownership.

It was a special day for the women’s groups and the entire community at Kanti village #Haryana because Jeffrey Sachs & the #UNSDSN team made an exclusive visit hosted by AMMACHI Labs and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. Prof. Jeffrey Sachs is an American economist and director of The Earth Institute at Columbia University. He is well known as one of the world’s leading experts on economic development and the fight against poverty.
He toured the village and learned about our skill development programs which have trained more than 50 women in toilet building, tailoring, computer & #lifeskills in Kanti. He also saw an overview of the wider #MAMath programs from Amrita SeRVe and AmritaCreate.
Around 2500 residents live in Kanti village and many did not have access to clean water, proper sanitation and decent roads until the #MAMath began development work in 2015. Jeff Sachs was pleased to hear about some of the sucesses due to Amrita’s many interventions and those specifically carried out by AMMACHI Labs such as:
-Women trained in Rural Toilet Building and life skills through computerized training
-Women taking part in other skill programs on economic empowerment and income generation by training on soap making courses, computers skills and tailoring skills.
-Concerted community-wide action towards achieving open defecation free #ODF status through awareness, behavioral change and toilet building.
-Community-wide cleaning, waste management & hygiene promotion activities and events specific to sanitation, women’s health, education for girl children, legal rights, anti-alcohol and anti-tobacco awareness and campaigns.
-Self Help Group (#SHG) formation and microfinance initiatives and skill training.
-Establishment of programs & structures that promote women’s leadership and gender equality such as women stepping into the role of community organizer #CO, women becoming change agents, women becoming Mahila Police Volunteers under the Union Ministry of Women & Child Development, thus promoting women’s safety, subject matter experts #SMEs and more.
-Water testing & installation of reverse osmosis filtration #RO
-Sustainability through a “Green revolution” of community-wide tree planting & participating in creating Amrita gardens, with organic, locally grown vegetables.
-Empowering women to build capacities and effectively liaise with Government and external agencies
Jeffrey Sachs also participated in several meetings with the SHG members, listening to their success stories and how they have been able to overcome personal, family, and community development challenges. One was an interactive discussion with the women’s groups, toilet building team and health workers where he spent time learning about the specific issues and understanding the impact of the project. Another meeting was with with tailoring students, and school age children and students who attend tuition classes and the school. This team presented their observations and findings from the Ideal Village exercise and their plan for next five years. He also leaned about our games for community development and participated in a demo.
Overall, he enjoyed interacting with the #sanitation champions and change makers who are working hard to transform the village. Because of all these initiatives, several success stories have emerged of women stepping into their power and making a change. Prof. Sachs commented positively about AMMACHI Labs’ pioneering work. In 2016, he was a plenary speaker at the RAHA 2016 conference at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. We sure hope to have Jeffrey Sachs and team back at Amrita very soon!
