SUMMARY:Webinar: Small water disinfection systems: UV light & the role of women in remote communities
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is organised by the IWA Sanitation and Water Management in Developing Countries Specialist Group and it is co-hosted by the International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA). \n\n\n\nWomen and girls often carry the responsibility of collecting water\, and they are disproportionately affected by poor water services and contaminated water. However\, their perspective has historically been excluded from large-scale efforts to improve water access in low-income settings. To overcome these inequalities\, the voices and needs of women and girls must be at the forefront as we design new and effective methods of delivering safely managed drinking water to communities in developing regions. In response\, this webinar will explore the crucial role of women in water resource management\, particularly for water disinfection in small or rural communities. \n\n\n\nThe discussions will start with a presentation on the connections between women and water\, what influences those connections\, and their importance. Water disinfection using ultraviolet (UV) light will then be introduced as an emerging tool to improve access to safely managed water for small\, remote water systems. This will then be tied back to the overall theme of the webinar with a presentation of the results of a study investigating women’s perceptions of a novel household UV disinfection system in rural indigenous communities in Mexico. Finally\, a panel discussion will be held to explore the role of women in water access and considerations for the safe and effective implementation of UV disinfection from a technological\, behavioural\, and institutional point of view. \n\n\n\nDr. Bhavani Rao will be speaking at the event. It is at 2:00 PM London time / 7:30 PM IST. \n\n\n\nLearn more and register here.

SUMMARY:"Introduction to Learning Engineering" by Dr. Shashi Kanth Shankar
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Amrita School of Social and Behavioural SciencesParticipants – AL Staff\, Research Scholars\, PhD Faculty and MSW FacultyStudents\, staff\, research scholars and faculty were treated to an expert lecture by Dr. Shashi Kanth Shankar\, Assistant Professor\, School of Social and Behavioural Sciences. \n\n\n\nIn this seminar\, Dr. Shashi Kanth Shankar introduced LE as a field and its subfields on an abstract level so that audience can relate to the bigger picture of supporting lifelong learning. Moreover\, the speaker also discussed some milestone projects from different subfields of LE so that the audience could get some deep insights about the works and the way in which they are carried out. He also shared the technical aspects involved in developing LE tools so that technical students can relate to the possibilities as future professionals or pursuing higher studies in this field. \n\n\n\nThe session wrapped up with an interactive Q&A. With over seven years of research experience\, Dr. Kanth provided a wonderful opportunity for the audience to discuss their interests and opportunities in LE with him. \n\n\n\nLearning Engineering (LE) is a field that aims to support teaching and learning practices through evidence-based decision-making by harnessing educational data. In general\, it covers several sub-fields like Learning Analytics\, Technology-Enhanced Learning\, Educational Data Mining\, and Artificial Intelligence in Education. One of the main objectives that LE as a field tries to meet in the future is to support lifelong learning. As it is mentioned in different educational policy documents including NEP2020 in India\, 21st-century skills and innovative pedagogies are required to support lifelong learning in society. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio \n\n\n\n Dr Shashi Kanth Shankar is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences and AMMACHI Labs\, Amrita Vishwa Vidyepeetham\, Amritapuri. Prior to joining AMMACHI Labs\, he was working with the Centre for Educational Technology\, Tallinn University\, Estonia (EU) as a Ph.D. scholar and junior researcher. He earned his M.Tech in CSE from Lovely Professional University\, Punjab\, and MCA from Sikkim Manipal University\, Sikkim. Moreover\, he earned his Bachelor’s in IT from Kuvempu University\, Karnataka. His research interests are in Technology-Enhanced Learning\, Learning Analytics\, Evidence-Based Decision-Making\, and Lifelong Learning.
