He was trained in history and biology at the Hebrew University\, Oxford\, and Harvard\, and is a historian of science and a writer. His books include The Man Who Invented the Chromosome (Harvard\, 2004)\, Rebels\, Mavericks and Heretics in Biology (Yale\, 2008)\, Outsider Scientists (Chicago\, 2013)\, Dreamers\, Visionaries and Revolutionaries in the Life Sciences (Chicago\, 2018)\, Evolutions: Fifteen Myths That Explain Our World (Farrar\, Straus\, and Giroux\, 2018\, and Handbook of the Historiography of Biology (Springer\, 2021). His book The Price of Altruism (W.W. Norton\, 2010) won the 2010 Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Best Book of the Year in Science and Technology\, was nominated for the Pulitzer prize\, and was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. Professor Harman has written and spoken widely for popular and professional audiences on genetics\, evolution\, history and philosophy of science\, altruism\, biography\, and science and mythology. He grew up in New York and Jerusalem where he lives with his wife\, Yael\, and their three little children. Oren sings bass with the Tel Aviv Chamber Choir.

DESCRIPTION:Human-Robot Collaborative Design \n\n\n\nSpeaker \n\n\n\nDr. Guy Hoffman\, Cornell University\, Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio \n\n\n\nDr. Guy Hoffman is Assistant Professor and the Mills Family Faculty Fellow in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University. Prior to that he was Assistant Professor at IDC Herzliya and co-director of the IDC Media Innovation Lab. Hoffman holds a Ph.D from MIT in the field of human-robot interaction. He heads the Human-Robot Collaboration and Companionship (HRC2) group\, studying the algorithms\, interaction schema\, and designs enabling close interactions between people and personal robots in the workplace and at home. Among others\, Hoffman developed the world’s first human-robot joint theater performance\, and the first real-time improvising human-robot Jazz duet. His research papers won several top academic awards\, including Best Paper awards at HRI and robotics conferences in 2004\, 2006\, 2008\, 2010\, 2013\, and 2015. In both 2010 and 2012\, he was selected as one of Israel’s most promising researchers under forty. His TEDx talk is one of the most viewed online talks on robotics\, watched more than 2.9 million times. Hoffman received his M.Sc. in Computer Science from Tel Aviv University as part of the Adi Lautman interdisciplinary excellence scholarship program.

He is currently a Full Professor at the Department of Psychology\, Director of the Language and Cognitive Development Laboratory at the Gonda Brain Research Center\, and Head of the Interdisciplinary Unit\, all at Bar-Ilan University\, Israel. His research – focusing on children’s cultural learning and social categorization – has been funded by the Israel Science Foundation\, German-Israel Foundation\, and Volkswagen Foundation\, and has been published in leading journals in Psychology. He has been an Associate Editor of the journal Child Development\, and is currently Associate Editor in the Annual Reviews of Developmental Psychology and Journal of Cognition and Development. He is a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Sciences.

From 1987 he was the Head of the Computer Science Department in the Leningrad Institute of New Technologies (in the former USSR). Between 1993 and 1997\, Ilya Levin was the Head of the Computer Systems Department in Holon Institute of Technology\, Israel. In 1997\, he was a Research Fellow in the Computer Science Department of the University of Massachusetts. For four years between 2003-2006\, Ilya Levin was an Associate Professor of the School of Engineering at the Bar Ilan University. In 2014 and 2018\, he was a visiting professor at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice\, Italy\, and Aix-Marseille Université\, France. Presently\, Prof. Ilya Levin is a Full Professor in the School of Education of Tel Aviv University. His recent research interests include Computer Design\, Cultural Studies of Information Society\, Science\, and Technology Education. Prof. Levin is the author of around 200 research papers\, both in Computer Engineering and in Humanities.

And With What Implications For Academia And Science? \n\n\n\nSpeaker  \n\n\n\nDr. Jeff Hearn\, Professor of Sociology and Gender Studies affiliated to Örebro University\, Sweden; Professor of Sociology\, University of Huddersfield\, UK; Professor Emeritus\, Hanken School of Economics\, Finland; Professor Extraordinarius\, University of South Africa; honorary doctor\, Lund University\, Sweden \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio \n\n\n\nDr. Hearn’s research has been involved in activism\, policy development and research over many years\, in Europe and beyond\, including long associations with South Africa. His research focuses on gender\, sexuality\, violence\, work\, organisations\, management\, social policy\, and transnational processes. He is co-managing editor\, Routledge Advances in Feminist Studies and Intersectionality book series; co-editor\, NORMA: The International Journal for Masculinity Studies; Co-chair\, RINGS: The International Research Association of Institutions of Advanced Gender Studies. Recent books include Men of the World\, 2015\, Sage; Revenge Pornography\, with Matthew Hall\, 2017; Engaging Youth in Activism\, Research and Pedagogical Praxis\, co-ed.\, 2018; Unsustainable Institutions of Men\, co-ed.\, 2019; all three Routledge; and Age at Work\, with Wendy Parkin\, Sage\, 2020. \n\n\n\nAbout This Talk \n\n\n\nDr. Hearn sought to contextualize and justify the study of men and masculinities as a sub-field of gender studies. In addition to the necessary and preeminent focus given to women in gender studies\, we must also include the study of men. Not as a replacement\, and not to put men at the centre of the universe (as that has already been done for millennia); rather\, provide a holistic view of human experience and explanation of gender in society—which includes both men and women (and non-binary). This is extremely relevant in the discussion of gender equality\, as men are typically in the position of power and dominance\, and there are social structures which perpetuate and reinforce this process. The roots of gender violence\, sexual assault\, and a number of other social ills that are frequently studied along with gender can benefit from the study of men and masculinities.

DESCRIPTION:A Methodology to Learn Lessons from How Community Empowerment through Digital Innovation in Water and Sanitation Sector has Changed Human Behaviour \n\n\n\nDr. Saket Pande; hydrologist and water economist at Delft University of Technology\, Netherlands (TU Delft) since 2010. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio \n\n\n\nSaket Pande’s project experience include assessment of impacts of climate change on agriculture and health in Benin\, anthropogenic influence (grazing) on land degradation and water resource availability in Ethiopia and assimilation and harmonisation of data sets from variety of sources and scales using a software that he co-developed. At Delft University of Technology\, he is involved with the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda of the United Nations and is investigating aspects of coupled human-water systems such as adoption of household water treatment systems\, links between population growth and water scarcity\, behaviour of smallholder farming in India\, valuation of water in Indian and Lebanese basins\, global P recovery from waste water for agriculture\, and coupled system modeling of rural-urban migration in Jiangsu province of China. Saket has been closely involved with sociohydrology and Panta Rhei\, the new scientific decade (2013-2022) of IAHS on coupled human water systems. Currently Saket is leading TU Delft contribution to a major water conservation project on smallholder sustainability in India. He is an associate editor of Journal of Hydrology\, Hydrological Sciences Journal and Frontiers in Water. \n\n\n\nAbout this talk  \n\n\n\nThe Government of India has set an ambitious target to end open defecation across India. AMMACHI Labs’ approach to ending open defecation in rural India is based upon a collaborative framework that trains women to build their own toilets\, through their ICT based training model that has already demonstrated success in empowering marginalized communities.  There is broad literature that highlights that individual and household psychology underpins WASH behaviour and adoption of related technologies\, such as cVET and building toilets accordingly. Several conceptual models exist to analyse the behaviour. One established model is Risk – Attitude – Norms- Ability – Self regulation (RANAS) model that systematically identifies\, measures and integrates behavioural and contextual factors to assess behaviour at an individual scale. \n\n\n\nThis presentation motivates the use of RANAS model to understand how cVET blended training program (ICT blended with hand-on training) is successfully (or not) leading to the adoption of wise sanitation practices by households in the targeted communities. The aim is to present an environmental psychology based methodology to learn from the success and challenges of implementing the training program in the communities and implement best strategies to maximize successful adoption of the program in other target communities. This is done by providing examples of field applications of the model in other human water use behaviour contexts\, such as adoption of household water treatment technologies\, efficient irrigation practices and conservation of ground water resources in countries such as Nepal\, Indonesia\, India and Vietnam.

And does it matter? \n\n\n\nDr. Francesca Borgonovi\, a British Academy Global Professor \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: She is a Senior Policy Analyst at the OECD\, responsible for analytical and developmental work in the OECD-led international assessments (PISA and PIAAC) and the Education for Inclusive Societies project. Her broader research interests include: gender and socio-economic disparities in academic achievement\, student engagement and motivation\, the outcomes of migrant and language minority students\, and the role of education in shaping trust and attitudes towards migration. \n\n\n\nAbout the talk: In 2018\, about one in three (33%) 15-year-olds\, on average across 52 high- and middle-income countries\, played videogames every day or almost every day. Among boys\, that proportion was close to one in two (49%). Many videogames that are popular among teenagers encourage inductive discovery as an effective problem-solving strategy. Reading instructions is something gamers seldom do. By contrast\, gaming often involves early information foraging and expansive exploration behaviors. In this paper\, we use data from the 2018 wave of the Programme for International Student Assessment to explore whether students who regularly play video-games (gamers) adopt behaviors that are typical of gaming while they complete a computer-based assessment of science. The assessment included interactive items designed to identify procedural science knowledge as well as static items designed to identify science content knowledge. We find that gamers do not differ from other students in science content knowledge and in reading fluency\, a measure of how fast they read. Compared to other students\, gamers spend less time reading instructions and display more active exploration behaviors in the assessment on items that include simulation tools. We examine differences in associations by country and\, especially\, by sex. We discuss the implications for education practice and for the design of computer-based assessments.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker Bio: Arnon Zangvil\, a freelance programmer and sociologist from Tel Aviv. He has been developing large-scale Internet platforms and health care platforms for leading vendors around the world\, conceptualizing products\, and managing R&D organizations. Over the last 10 years\, Arnon has been studying the societal and political implications of digital platforms. \n\n\n\nReimagining Social Media with Arnon Zangvil \n\n\n\nThe purpose of this talk is to identify alternative forms of social media that may tip the balance of power away from the handful of vendors that currently control the platforms\, towards the multitude of diverse and unique communities around the world that constitute the more than 2 billion people whose lives are currently affected by these platforms.  \n\n\n\nWhen looking broadly at data-driven production\, three main organizing principles (1)\, or models\, may be identified: The first is the market model\, in which differentiation\, competition and demand serve to create choice and determine value. The second model is a centralized control model\, in which a state (or a large enough corporation) sets policy\, as is required\, for example\, for ensuring fair access to a public utility. The third model is the ‘commons’ model\, in which free association under specific conditions (2) enables cooperative and reciprocal modes of production\, which is the primary model that was used for designing the Internet itself. \n\n\n\nIn real world environments\, the three models usually coexist under tension\, but in the case of today’s social media networks\, the market model only serves the advertisers\, as the users are the products sold on this market\, and centralized control is exercised solely by the vendor with little meaningful state regulation.  \n\n\n\nHowever\, alternative forms of social media exist. Common-based protocols like federated identity and decentralized social networking protocols (e.g. ActivityPub) allow a radically different model of social media: Commons-based models in which communities may both determine their own rules based on their own values\, and at the same time interact with other communities. Only several million users use these systems today\, but now that the societal and political dangers of today’s platforms have been exposed\, this alternative playground may be able to show a path forward.

DESCRIPTION:Saudamini Siegrist served as Senior Adviser for Child Protection in Emergencies at UNICEF from 2012-2017 and previously served as Chief of Child Protection for UNICEF in the State of Palestine and as Child Protection Specialist at the UNICEF Innocenti Research Center. She also worked in the Humanitarian Policy Unit of Emergency Operations at UNICEF on issues related to children and armed conflict\, international criminal justice\, and monitoring and reporting of grave violations against children. \n\n\n\nSaudamini was seconded to the Sierra Leone Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 2003-2004 and served as rapporteur and writer for the Children’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report. She also served as the lead writer for the publication Children and Truth Commissions\, co-authored by UNICEF and the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ). She co-edited the book\, Children and Transitional Justice: Truth-Telling\, Accountability\, and Reconciliation published by the Human Rights Program at Harvard Law School\, and contributed to The Impact of War on Children\, authored by Graça Machel. She holds a Doctorate from New York University and a Masters’s degree from Columbia University.

SUMMARY:Amrita-TAU Workshop Series: Sustainable Development Workshop: SDG 6 - Water
DESCRIPTION:Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham with Tel Aviv University\, Israel\, organized a week-long workshop at Amritapuri campus on water in the context of sustainable development\, from September 19-25\, 2019. All of the 80+ workshop participants were trained to enable them to deal with complex phenomenon\, knowledge on methods for sustainable development\, knowledge of natural and social conditions\, as well as limits towards sustainable development. \n\n\n\nProf. Tammie Ronen (Head of the Renata Adler Memorial Research Center for Child Welfare and Protection at the Bob Shapell School of Social Work\, of Tel Aviv) made the opening remarks. The welcome and orientation included Dr. Balakrishnan Shankar (Dean\, Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences) and Dr. Bhavani Rao (Director\, AMMACHI Labs) who also joined as Amrita hosts. Prof. Ram Fishman (Assistant Professor of Public Policy at Tel Aviv University) joined with his welcome remarks. Prof. Hadas Mamane addressed on “A Broad Overview of the Global Water Challenge\, Globally\, India and Israel”. Prof. Neta Ziv addressed on Water and SDG 6 and on water regime and water rights in India. Prof. Tamar led a review session. Prof. Bhavani Rao addressed on “Cultural Dimensions of Water”.  \n\n\n\nThere were case studies from Amrita’s water projects led by staff. Talks also on Water Technologies by Dr. Hadas Mamane (Tel Aviv)\, Dr. Sanjay Pal (Amrita School of Biotechnology)\, Dr. Maneesha Ramesh (Amrita WNA)\, Water Resource Management by Dr. Harikumar P. S.\, Dr. Ram Fishman\, Behavioral Change by Dr. Tamar\, online talk on Education and Awareness by Ori Shor and a discussion on ‘The Road Ahead’ and Indo-Israeli collaboration closed the workshop.

This workshop was intended to expose researchers to tools to help define research questions for themselves. The workshop was a combination of lectures\, presentations by students and feedback sessions.
