And does it matter? \n\n\n\nDr. Francesca Borgonovi\, a British Academy Global Professor \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: She is a Senior Policy Analyst at the OECD\, responsible for analytical and developmental work in the OECD-led international assessments (PISA and PIAAC) and the Education for Inclusive Societies project. Her broader research interests include: gender and socio-economic disparities in academic achievement\, student engagement and motivation\, the outcomes of migrant and language minority students\, and the role of education in shaping trust and attitudes towards migration. \n\n\n\nAbout the talk: In 2018\, about one in three (33%) 15-year-olds\, on average across 52 high- and middle-income countries\, played videogames every day or almost every day. Among boys\, that proportion was close to one in two (49%). Many videogames that are popular among teenagers encourage inductive discovery as an effective problem-solving strategy. Reading instructions is something gamers seldom do. By contrast\, gaming often involves early information foraging and expansive exploration behaviors. In this paper\, we use data from the 2018 wave of the Programme for International Student Assessment to explore whether students who regularly play video-games (gamers) adopt behaviors that are typical of gaming while they complete a computer-based assessment of science. The assessment included interactive items designed to identify procedural science knowledge as well as static items designed to identify science content knowledge. We find that gamers do not differ from other students in science content knowledge and in reading fluency\, a measure of how fast they read. Compared to other students\, gamers spend less time reading instructions and display more active exploration behaviors in the assessment on items that include simulation tools. We examine differences in associations by country and\, especially\, by sex. We discuss the implications for education practice and for the design of computer-based assessments.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker Bio: Arnon Zangvil\, a freelance programmer and sociologist from Tel Aviv. He has been developing large-scale Internet platforms and health care platforms for leading vendors around the world\, conceptualizing products\, and managing R&D organizations. Over the last 10 years\, Arnon has been studying the societal and political implications of digital platforms. \n\n\n\nReimagining Social Media with Arnon Zangvil \n\n\n\nThe purpose of this talk is to identify alternative forms of social media that may tip the balance of power away from the handful of vendors that currently control the platforms\, towards the multitude of diverse and unique communities around the world that constitute the more than 2 billion people whose lives are currently affected by these platforms.  \n\n\n\nWhen looking broadly at data-driven production\, three main organizing principles (1)\, or models\, may be identified: The first is the market model\, in which differentiation\, competition and demand serve to create choice and determine value. The second model is a centralized control model\, in which a state (or a large enough corporation) sets policy\, as is required\, for example\, for ensuring fair access to a public utility. The third model is the ‘commons’ model\, in which free association under specific conditions (2) enables cooperative and reciprocal modes of production\, which is the primary model that was used for designing the Internet itself. \n\n\n\nIn real world environments\, the three models usually coexist under tension\, but in the case of today’s social media networks\, the market model only serves the advertisers\, as the users are the products sold on this market\, and centralized control is exercised solely by the vendor with little meaningful state regulation.  \n\n\n\nHowever\, alternative forms of social media exist. Common-based protocols like federated identity and decentralized social networking protocols (e.g. ActivityPub) allow a radically different model of social media: Commons-based models in which communities may both determine their own rules based on their own values\, and at the same time interact with other communities. Only several million users use these systems today\, but now that the societal and political dangers of today’s platforms have been exposed\, this alternative playground may be able to show a path forward.

SUMMARY:Seminar: Reconcile Conflict & Sustain Peace
DESCRIPTION:Saudamini Siegrist served as Senior Adviser for Child Protection in Emergencies at UNICEF from 2012-2017 and previously served as Chief of Child Protection for UNICEF in the State of Palestine and as Child Protection Specialist at the UNICEF Innocenti Research Center. She also worked in the Humanitarian Policy Unit of Emergency Operations at UNICEF on issues related to children and armed conflict\, international criminal justice\, and monitoring and reporting of grave violations against children. \n\n\n\nSaudamini was seconded to the Sierra Leone Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 2003-2004 and served as rapporteur and writer for the Children’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report. She also served as the lead writer for the publication Children and Truth Commissions\, co-authored by UNICEF and the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ). She co-edited the book\, Children and Transitional Justice: Truth-Telling\, Accountability\, and Reconciliation published by the Human Rights Program at Harvard Law School\, and contributed to The Impact of War on Children\, authored by Graça Machel. She holds a Doctorate from New York University and a Masters’s degree from Columbia University.

SUMMARY:Amrita-TAU Workshop Series: Sustainable Development Workshop: SDG 6 - Water
DESCRIPTION:Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham with Tel Aviv University\, Israel\, organized a week-long workshop at Amritapuri campus on water in the context of sustainable development\, from September 19-25\, 2019. All of the 80+ workshop participants were trained to enable them to deal with complex phenomenon\, knowledge on methods for sustainable development\, knowledge of natural and social conditions\, as well as limits towards sustainable development. \n\n\n\nProf. Tammie Ronen (Head of the Renata Adler Memorial Research Center for Child Welfare and Protection at the Bob Shapell School of Social Work\, of Tel Aviv) made the opening remarks. The welcome and orientation included Dr. Balakrishnan Shankar (Dean\, Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences) and Dr. Bhavani Rao (Director\, AMMACHI Labs) who also joined as Amrita hosts. Prof. Ram Fishman (Assistant Professor of Public Policy at Tel Aviv University) joined with his welcome remarks. Prof. Hadas Mamane addressed on “A Broad Overview of the Global Water Challenge\, Globally\, India and Israel”. Prof. Neta Ziv addressed on Water and SDG 6 and on water regime and water rights in India. Prof. Tamar led a review session. Prof. Bhavani Rao addressed on “Cultural Dimensions of Water”.  \n\n\n\nThere were case studies from Amrita’s water projects led by staff. Talks also on Water Technologies by Dr. Hadas Mamane (Tel Aviv)\, Dr. Sanjay Pal (Amrita School of Biotechnology)\, Dr. Maneesha Ramesh (Amrita WNA)\, Water Resource Management by Dr. Harikumar P. S.\, Dr. Ram Fishman\, Behavioral Change by Dr. Tamar\, online talk on Education and Awareness by Ori Shor and a discussion on ‘The Road Ahead’ and Indo-Israeli collaboration closed the workshop.

DESCRIPTION:The Center for Women’s Empowerment & Gender Equality in collaboration with the Amrita Center for Research and Development (ACRD)\, recently organized an international workshop for researchers on “Defining and Refining – Research Methodology Workshop on First Steps in Research” from August 2 – 4\, 2019.  \n\n\n\nFaculty members included Dr. Padma Rao Sahib\, University of Groningen\, The Netherlands\, and Dr. Sandeep Pillai\, Università Bocconi\, Milan\, Italy\, leading the workshop at Amritapuri campus of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. This workshop was intended to expose researchers to tools to help define research questions for themselves. The workshop was a combination of lectures\, presentations by students and feedback sessions.
