Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, a leading academic institution renowned for its pioneering research, has unveiled a cutting-edge AI-powered monitoring system designed to address the rising human-wildlife conflicts, particularly those involving elephants. The new system, named “Amrita Elephant Watch,” is developed by the University’s Ammachi Labs and aims to balance human and wildlife needs by providing real-time tracking and AI-driven alerts.
The innovative technology is designed to manage the interactions between elephants and humans, ensuring that elephants have access to essential resources while preventing them from straying into human settlements. The system employs AI algorithms and IoT technology to analyze video feeds from strategically placed surveillance cameras, enabling precise detection and tracking of elephant movements.
Amrita Elephant Watch is equipped with mobile network connectivity, allowing it to send immediate alerts to farmers, landowners, and authorities about the elephants’ movements. This feature facilitates timely interventions to prevent potential conflicts and safeguard both human and animal welfare.

Amrita Elephant Watch was recently highlighted at the GPAI Summit 2023, where it received considerable acclaim from industry experts and policymakers. The project has also been recognized by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY), which featured it on its website as part of the “AI in Agriculture (Addressing Human-Elephant Conflict in Villages)” initiative. The university is now focused on bringing this transformative technology to market.
