November 30, 2023 - Update on #beekeeping activities in the village of #Giriya, #Uttarakhand, by women from the local Self-Help Groups (SHG): Following similar trainings given to women in the #Bhiri and #Nala villages, the beekeepers at Giriya were offered training and instructions on honey extraction, with focus on the precautions to observe before extracting honey, and the protection of the brood/larvae and the bee queen during the process.Today, while extracting honey, the queen came out, which created an opportunity for the women to learn how to catch the queen and keep her safely in a special box (the white plastic tube shown in the photos here). This way, the queen doesn't run away and is protected. Once the extraction process was finished, the queen was released and safely back in the box. The project is facilitated by the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham Center for Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equality #CWEGE, supported by Esri India, with technical assistance from Maruti Overseas. It aims to establish apiaries in the three villages of Nala, Bhiri and Giriya, and provide extensive training to women's #SHGs in beekeeping, with post-training monitoring and business development support. ...
