Empowering Women Through Technology: Dr. Bhavani Rao’s Address at UNESCO Forum

Dr. Bhavani Rao, Director at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, recently addressed the 12th Forum of the UNESCO Chair in Media and Gender. The event, held at China Women’s University in Beijing, focused on the theme of “Digital Empowerment and Global Women’s Development.” Attending virtually, Dr. Rao delivered an inspiring talk on how Amrita University’s tech-driven initiatives are transforming cultural narratives and empowering women, particularly in rural India.

Breaking Barriers with Technology

Dr. Rao spotlighted Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham’s vocational training programs, which have enabled women in rural India to defy gender norms. By offering training in traditionally male-dominated trades such as plumbing, masonry, and plastering, the university has equipped women with essential life skills and livelihood opportunities. These trailblazing women became India’s first certified female plumbers, challenging cultural stereotypes and significantly contributing to community development.

One notable achievement was their role in advancing India’s Swachh Bharat Mission. Armed with their training, these women built toilets in their homes, tested water for E. Coli, and advocated for the importance of sanitation. Their efforts persuaded entire communities to embrace the need for proper sanitation. Recognized by the Indian government, these women received contracts to build toilets across 18 villages, which were later declared open defecation free. This accomplishment earned them national recognition, including acknowledgment from the President of India.

Resilience Infrastructure Post COVID-19
Dr. Rao also discussed the resilience-building efforts undertaken during the COVID-19 pandemic. The lockdowns disrupted the operations of self-help groups (SHGs) that provided financial support and training to over 250,000 women. To address this, Amrita University introduced digital financial literacy training to over 4,500 women, forming “Smart Self-Help Groups.” These digital tools ensured that SHGs could continue functioning remotely during crises. Additionally, the initiative challenged societal norms by empowering women to own and use technology, traditionally considered a male domain. By promoting digital inclusion, these programs not only restored economic stability but also redefined women’s roles in technology and household decision-making.
A Vision for Sustainable Change
Dr. Rao concluded her address by echoing the wisdom of spiritual leader Amma: “A flower must open in its own time and cannot be forced to blossom.” She emphasized that sustainable change requires a gentle, inclusive approach that allows society to grow organically rather than imposing mandates. Through its innovative programs, Amrita University is reshaping the narrative around women and technology. By empowering women to break stereotypes and embrace digital tools, the university is fostering a future where women’s potential is fully realized.

Dr. Rao’s address at the UNESCO Forum reinforces Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham’s commitment to advancing women’s empowerment and highlights the transformative power of technology in achieving gender equality. #AmritaUniversity #WomenInTech #UNESCO
