Empowering Coastal Women Through Sustainable Seaweed Farming

Ramanathapuram—Sambai, Olaikuda, Thirupalikudi, Thondi, and Soliyakudi, March 8th – 14th, 2025, AMMACHI Labs and Amrita’s Center for Women’s Empowerment & Gender Equality took a significant step in supporting coastal women engaged in sustainable seaweed farming.

A total of 115 women from five villages in Ramanathapuram—Sambai, Olaikuda, Thirupalikudi, Thondi, and Soliyakudi—received essential equipment, including life jackets and fishnets. These provisions aim to enhance both the safety and efficiency of their farming practices, ensuring sustainable growth and improved well-being.

Mr. Kartikraja, Field Inspector from the Department of Fisheries, Ramanathapuram, praised the initiative. He emphasized that while government schemes generally provide farming equipment like rafts, this initiative goes a step further by including vital safety materials such as life jackets and protective knives.

Through these efforts, Amrita University continues to foster sustainable livelihoods, empower coastal women, and contribute to environmental conservation.

This project is part of AMMACHI Labs’ “Blue is the New Pink” initiative and is implemented by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, with support from Transworld Group and Esri.
