Amrita University Students Conduct Post-Disaster Livelihood Assessment in Wayanad

11th November 2024, Wayanad: The School of Social and Behavioural Sciences (SSBS) at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, through AMMACHI Labs and the Centre for Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equality (CWEGE), continues to extend its support to communities affected by the devastating Wayanad landslide of July 2024.

As part of ongoing rehabilitation efforts, a team of 30 Master of Social Work (MSW) students — comprising 22 women and 8 men from the Amritapuri campus — conducted a post-disaster livelihood needs assessment in the affected areas between 31st October and 10th November 2024.

During this intensive field study, the students engaged in community mapping, household surveys, and focus group discussions with local families, community leaders, and NGOs. Their comprehensive data collection covered:

  • 615 household surveys

  • 517 mental health surveys

  • 220 landslide impact surveys

The study explored key aspects such as livelihood challenges, access to markets, and the psychological impact of displacement on affected residents. By combining academic research with grassroots engagement, the initiative aims to contribute actionable insights for policymakers and organizations involved in Wayanad’s recovery.

The findings will play a crucial role in designing targeted interventions and policy recommendations that promote sustainable livelihoods, mental well-being, and long-term community resilience in the region.

This initiative reflects Amrita University’s commitment to compassion-driven field engagement, empowering students to translate learning into meaningful service — rebuilding lives, hope, and resilience in disaster-affected communities.
