October 20th, 2024 – In response to the devastating landslides that struck Wayanad, Kerala, on July 30, 2024, Mata Amritanandamayi (Amma) has launched extensive relief and rehabilitation efforts, ensuring sustained support for the affected communities. In the wake of the tragedy, which caused severe loss of life and widespread destruction, Amma initiated a range of relief activities, including providing food, financial assistance, and the deployment of doctors and volunteers to assist those in need.
A team of scientists from Amrita University has been dispatched to assess the regions hardest hit by the landslides, and Amma has pledged to support the deployment of the Amrita Landslide Early Warning System in Wayanad to prevent similar disasters in the future. This system, developed by Amrita University, leverages technology to provide early warnings of potential landslide threats, enhancing safety and preparedness.
Survivors of the landslide recently shared with Amma that within minutes, they had lost not only loved ones and homes but also their livelihoods and sense of security. In response, Amma organized a holistic needs assessment in Wayanad, led by Amrita University’s Dr. Bhavani Rao and some of Amma’s ashramites of Amma’s ashram. On Sunday, the team met with local stakeholders and affected community members to assess the broader impact and strategize ways to address the community’s urgent needs.
Plans are now in place to introduce vocational skills training and livelihood diversification programs, aiming to reduce vulnerabilities and bolster resilience in the face of future challenges. This initiative marks a vital step towards rebuilding lives, empowering individuals with sustainable skills and resources to restore their economic stability.
Reflecting on the tragedy, Amma shared,“My children, the landslides in Wayanad and the huge loss of life, destruction, and misery are deeply painful. Amma shares the suffering of all those affected by this tragedy. In times of crisis like this, it is imperative that we come together to help each other as best we can.”
