AMMACHI Labs Advances Seaweed Cultivation Efforts with Community Engagement in Olaikuda

Olaikuda, December 17-20, 2024 : The AMMACHI Labs Seaweed Cultivation team conducted a series of impactful activities this week, including an awareness session on marine biodiversity with students in Olaikuda and visits to the homes of local students. These efforts are part of the larger initiative to promote sustainable seaweed cultivation as a climate solution and a pathway to women’s economic empowerment.

During their visit, the team met with DDF Director Prabavathy to discuss the ongoing seaweed cultivation project and to identify potential new villages for expansion. Local officials were engaged in discussions about the “Blue is the New Pink” initiative, which focuses on empowering women through marine conservation and sustainable practices.

Key aspects of the project—such as marine conservation, women’s economic empowerment, and sustainable development—were highlighted, and questions related to training, implementation, and community involvement were addressed.

The team also expressed gratitude to local leaders for their support and guidance:

  • Umar Faruq, Panchayat Leader, Thirupalikudi
  • Chandramohan, Panchayat Secretary, Nambuthalai
  • Bala, Panchayat Leader, Kadalur, Morpannai
  • Kokila, Panchayat Secretary, Vattanam, Damodarapattinam
  • Senthil, Panchayat Secretary, Mugilthagam/Soliyakudi

The “Blue is the New Pink” campaign exemplifies the potential of grassroots efforts in fostering economic resilience and ecological balance within coastal communities.
