Thiruppalaikkudi, Tamil Nadu : February 5, 2025: The Ocean Farming team at AMMACHI Labs is making significant strides in empowering women by promoting the cultivation of indigenous seaweed. This initiative is opening up new avenues for economic growth and self-sufficiency among coastal communities.
As part of their ongoing efforts, the team recently visited several villages, including Thondi, Lanjiyad, Thirupalaikudi, Sambai, Morpanai, and Soliyakudi. Engaging directly with local communities, they distributed seaweed seeds to women interested in adopting this sustainable practice. For those already involved in seaweed cultivation, the team facilitated discussions on the benefits of nurturing indigenous species over the introduced Kappaphycus variety, which has raised ecological concerns.
The enthusiasm among women in these villages has been remarkable, with over 100 expressing interest in starting seaweed cultivation. However, the initiative also faces resistance in certain areas, where deep-rooted traditions and societal norms pose challenges. Even with approval from local governing bodies, some women remain hesitant due to a lack of support from their families and village leaders. This underscores the broader issue of dismantling entrenched social barriers that hinder women’s participation in economic activities.
Despite these challenges, AMMACHI Labs remains committed to providing training and resources to support aspiring seaweed cultivators. By equipping women with the necessary knowledge and tools, the initiative aims to create a sustainable livelihood model that benefits both individuals and the environment.
This project is implemented by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and supported by Transworld Group and Esri, reflecting a collaborative effort to drive positive change in coastal communities.
