27 January 2025, Olaikuda, India – Members of AMMACHI Labs recently visited Olaikkuda to connect with women participating in the ongoing Seaweed Cultivation Project. The visit provided valuable insights into the challenges faced by local cultivators, particularly due to shifting climate conditions.
The women shared how the recent cold weather has impacted their ability to work, despite this season typically being ideal for seaweed cultivation. The unpredictable climate patterns are posing new challenges, requiring adaptability and resilience from the community.
Despite these difficulties, the initiative continues to grow, with 10 new women expressing interest in joining the project. Their enthusiasm highlights the community’s commitment to sustainable livelihoods and the potential for expansion in the region.
The Seaweed Cultivation Project is implemented by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, with support from Transworld Group and Esri. This initiative aims to empower women through sustainable aquaculture, providing them with economic opportunities and skills to navigate environmental challenges.
