Amrita SeRVe Villages Celebrate World Environment Day with Collective Action for Sustainability and Women’s Empowerment

June 5, 2025 — In a spirited celebration of World Environment Day, the Amrita SeRVe village community came together to lead a series of impactful activities promoting environmental awareness, sustainability, and women’s empowerment.

The day’s events highlighted the transformative power of community-led action and the vital role women and children play in protecting the environment and fostering long-term behavioral change.

🌱 Cloth Bag Campaign: Say No to Polythene

In a strong stand against plastic pollution, women from the community pledged to “Adopt cloth bags, eliminate polythene.” Guided by facilitators from Amrita SeRVe, participants learned how to upcycle old clothes into durable, reusable shopping bags. This hands-on workshop helped instill sustainable habits while addressing the pressing need to reduce single-use plastics in daily life.

🌳 Tree Planting for a Greener Tomorrow

An enthusiastic tree-planting drive marked another key initiative, where saplings were planted across the village. Community members, especially women and children, pledged to nurture the trees, reinforcing Amrita SeRVe’s commitment to afforestation and restoring green cover in rural India.

♻️ Waste Segregation Awareness

A series of interactive waste management sessions provided practical training on household waste segregation. Participants developed colorful visual charts to understand the separation of wet and dry waste, equipping them with sustainable tools to manage waste responsibly and reduce their environmental footprint.

👥 Community at the Heart of Change

The event saw the active participation of 121 community members, including women, children, and local leaders. Their collective efforts reflect a shared determination to build resilient, eco-conscious communities. The celebration also underscored the importance of grassroots involvement in addressing climate change and environmental degradation.

“World Environment Day is not just about planting trees—it’s about planting values of care, responsibility, and community,” said one of the Amrita SeRVe facilitators. “Today, our women and children took the lead in shaping a greener tomorrow.”

Through programs like this, Amrita SeRVe continues to champion holistic rural development, where empowerment and sustainability go hand in hand.
