Beyond Barriers, Building Belonging

An interactive session with journalist, politician and social activist Apsara Reddy on identity, inclusion, gender mainstreaming and social change at AmritaSSBS, Amritapuri.

What does it mean to truly know ourselves and claim our place in the world? This question shaped an engaging conversation at AmritaSSBS, encouraging students to reflect on identity, dignity and the importance of building a more inclusive society.

The Amrita School of Social and Behavioural Sciences (AmritaSSBS), Amritapuri, welcomed Apsara Reddy, journalist, politician and social activist, for an interactive session exploring identity, inclusion and social change.

Self-Awareness as the Foundation of Social Work

Drawing on her journey through journalism, politics and transgender advocacy, Ms. Reddy reflected on self-awareness as a starting point for meaningful social work. She highlighted the importance of understanding one's identity and experiences when working towards a more equitable and compassionate society.

She also spoke about the role of family support in her transition and emphasised that transgender inclusion must go beyond token representation. Meaningful inclusion requires access to mainstream employment, professional opportunities and benefits based on individual merit and capabilities.

Building belonging means creating spaces where people are valued for who they are and have equitable opportunities to participate, contribute and thrive.

Perspectives on Politics and Representation

Sharing insights from her political journey, Ms. Reddy spoke about her experience as a spokesperson for the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) during the tenure of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. Her reflections offered students perspectives on public engagement, representation and the challenges of advancing inclusion within social and political systems.

Students Engage with Questions of Inclusion

Students actively participated in discussions on vulnerability, intersectionality and gender mainstreaming. Their questions and perspectives highlighted how social identities and lived experiences can influence access to opportunities and participation in society.

The exchange encouraged students to connect academic learning with real-world challenges and consider how social work can help dismantle barriers, strengthen communities and promote dignity and equality.

A Visit to Amritapuri

During her visit, Ms. Reddy also spent time with Dr. Bhavani Rao, Dean of the School of Social and Behavioural Sciences, at Mata Amritanandamayi's ashram in Amritapuri. She enjoyed the peaceful surroundings, natural beauty and a meal at the Western Café.

AmritaSSBS extends its gratitude to Ms. Apsara Reddy for sharing her experiences and insights with the university community and looks forward to welcoming her again.
