Kochi | September 30, 2026: A session on “Building Gender Harmony” was conducted at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), Kochi, on September 30, 2026, as part of Deeksharambh, the student induction programme for newly enrolled students.
The session, held from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM, was organised to introduce students to the values and ethos of Amrita and encourage greater awareness and understanding of gender, equality, compassion and respectful relationships. The programme was attended by students pursuing Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and Diploma in Dental Mechanics.
The session was led by Radhika Shetty, Subject Matter Expert from the Center for Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equality (CWEGE).
The programme began with an introduction to what makes Amrita University distinctive, including the vision and contributions of its Chancellor towards women’s empowerment and social transformation. The session then explored the concepts of gender roles in society, examining how social expectations and gender roles are created and reinforced.
Students were introduced to the distinction between sex and gender, followed by an interactive discussion on consent and its importance in building healthy, respectful relationships. The session also introduced the Gender Spectrum, helping students understand gender as a broader and diverse aspect of human identity.
The programme concluded by highlighting the importance of incorporating compassion, self-control and charity into everyday life. These values were presented as essential elements in fostering harmonious relationships and creating a more inclusive and respectful society.
The session provided the newly enrolled students with an opportunity to reflect on gender equality, social responsibility and the values that contribute to a harmonious community, while connecting these principles with the broader ethos of Amrita.
