Empowering Coastal Women Through Sustainable Ocean Farming in Mudga
The AMMACHI Labs Ocean Farming team is advancing its impactful work in Mudga, Karnataka, empowering coastal women through a structured, phased approach that moves from capacity building to hands-on seaweed cultivation.
Capacity Building (February)
In February, a comprehensive 10-day training program engaged 25–30 coastal women, equipping them with essential skills and knowledge for sustainable livelihoods. The training focused on:
- Environmental awareness and ocean stewardship
- Digital literacy for improved communication and access to information
- Business skills and value-added product development
Participants also took part in field-based learning activities such as coastal transect walks, pollution mapping, and community clean-up drives. These initiatives not only enhanced environmental understanding but also fostered a sense of collective responsibility and community engagement.
Field Implementation (March)
Building on the training phase, women from local Self-Help Groups have now transitioned into active field implementation. Key developments include:
- Participation of 10–23 women in regular field activities
- Ongoing monitoring, cleaning, and maintenance of seaweed rafts and cultivation lines
- Healthy growth of seaweed and stable raft infrastructure
- Anticipated harvest scheduled for April 2026
While challenges such as wave action, algae accumulation, and minor infrastructure damage have emerged, these are being effectively managed through adaptive practices and continuous technical support.
Scaling Proven Models to New Regions
This initiative builds upon AMMACHI Labs’ successful seaweed cultivation models in Tamil Nadu, now thoughtfully adapted to suit the ecological and social context of Uttara Kannada. The program demonstrates how sustainable ocean farming can serve as a viable livelihood option while promoting environmental conservation.
