Dr. Bhavani Rao, Director at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, recently addressed the 12th Forum of the UNESCO Chair in Media and Gender. The event, held at China Women’s University in Beijing, focused on the theme of “Digital Empowerment and Global Women’s Development.” Attending virtually, Dr. Rao delivered an inspiring talk on how Amrita University’s tech-driven initiatives are transforming cultural narratives and empowering women, particularly in rural India.
Breaking Barriers with Technology
Dr. Rao spotlighted Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham’s vocational training programs, which have enabled women in rural India to defy gender norms. By offering training in traditionally male-dominated trades such as plumbing, masonry, and plastering, the university has equipped women with essential life skills and livelihood opportunities. These trailblazing women became India’s first certified female plumbers, challenging cultural stereotypes and significantly contributing to community development.
One notable achievement was their role in advancing India’s Swachh Bharat Mission. Armed with their training, these women built toilets in their homes, tested water for E. Coli, and advocated for the importance of sanitation. Their efforts persuaded entire communities to embrace the need for proper sanitation. Recognized by the Indian government, these women received contracts to build toilets across 18 villages, which were later declared open defecation free. This accomplishment earned them national recognition, including acknowledgment from the President of India.
