Virtual Symposium on Tsunami Risk Reduction & Community Resilience

“Virtual Symposium on Tsunami Risk Reduction & Community Resilience” on 26th December 2020 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. IST, 1030 am CET and 930 sm GMT co-hosted by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and ESRI India.
The Amrita Center for Wireless networks & Applications, UNESCO Chair on Experiential Learning for Sustainable Innovation & Development, UNESCO Chair in Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equality – Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and ESRI India, global market leader in Geographic Information Systems are jointly hosting a virtual international symposium to commemorate the Indian Ocean Tsunami of 26th December 2004, to critically reflect on the impact on the global society and track the tsunami preparedness and advances in science and technology enabled early warning systems to build sustainable and resilient communities. This symposium seeks to unveil challenges faced and lessons learnt from this unprecedented disaster event which not only impacted coastal communities in 14 countries in the Indian Ocean, but provided a watershed opportunity to enact legislations, establish institutional mechanisms for disaster governance at the national, state and district levels and strengthen community resilience, governance, and technological solutions to mitigate any future onset of Tsunamis. This symposium intends to provide a platform to policy makers, technological innovators, the oceanography researchers and industry to come together and share their insights about the progress made in strengthening tsunami preparedness as well as throw light on some of the most assuring technological advancements and strategies that have helped to develop tsunami aware, tsunami ready and resilient communities across the world.
Dr. M Rajeevan, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India; Dr. Shailesh Nayak, Former Director, INCOIS and Former Secretary, MoES, Government of India; Dr T. Sreenivasa Kumar, Director, INCOIS; Mr. Ardito M Kodijat, National Professional Officer, UNESCO-IOC Indian Ocean Tsunami Centre, Indonesia; Ms. Madhavi Malalgoda Ariyabandu, DRR Expert, Sri Lanka; Dr R Ramaswamy and several others will be addressing the Virtual Symposium in Invited Keynote Addresses and Thematic Panel Discussions.
