From Coastal Roots to Culinary Heights: Seaweed Women Farmers Shine at Incredible Chef Challenge 2025

Bangalore, Karnataka – 2025 : In an inspiring display of grassroots innovation and culinary creativity, three women seaweed farmers from Tamil Nadu’s coastal villages—Rakkini, Gnanasowndari, and Dhanalakshmi—took center stage at the Incredible Chef Challenge 2025 in Bangalore. Supported under the GEF Small Grants Programme (Operational Phase 7), this milestone moment was part of the Ocean Farming project implemented by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.

For the first time, these women travelled more than 500 kilometers from Olaikuda and Sambai villages to present the Devaamritam Seaweed Superfood Pickle—a locally crafted, nutrient-rich innovation that merges traditional knowledge with sustainable marine farming.

A Taste of Innovation

The event marked a transformative leap for the women-led microenterprise, as:

  • Hundreds of food lovers discovered seaweed as a versatile, nutritious superfood

  • ✅ Their stall became a magnet for chefs and culinary experts across the region

  • ✅ The team attracted partnership opportunities for scale-up and broader market access

The Devaamritam Seaweed Pickle, born from the depths of India’s coastal ecosystems and the hands of empowered women, is fast becoming a symbol of sustainable, ocean-based livelihoods meeting mainstream food innovation.

Empowerment in Action

This initiative—once rooted in simple livelihood training—has blossomed into a movement of empowerment, where women not only farm the ocean but transform its bounty into value-added products that are now entering competitive culinary spaces.

“This was more than just a product showcase. It was a celebration of courage, creativity, and community,” said members of the AMMACHI Labs Ocean Farming team.

The event demonstrated how rural women, when equipped with the right support and opportunities, can drive powerful narratives of economic resilience and environmental stewardship.

A Model for the Blue Economy

As India intensifies efforts to develop its Blue Economy, this story stands as a testament to the role of women-led microenterprises in shaping sustainable futures—where food, livelihoods, and marine conservation go hand in hand.

This remarkable journey was made possible through partnerships with:

  • GEF Small Grants Programme – Operational Phase 7 (GEF SGP India)

  • United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

  • Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India (MOEFCC GOI)

  • The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI)

  • Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham

What began in the coastal waters of Tamil Nadu has now taken flight on a national platform—proving that empowerment starts not just with opportunity, but with the courage to dream, the strength to travel, and the power of innovation.
