Groundbreaking Eye Health Initiative Launched in Samburu County, Kenya

October 5, 2024 – Kisima Health Center in Samburu County, Kenya, was the site of an innovative initiative aimed at revolutionizing eye health in rural communities. The first-ever training in Community Engagement for Better Eye Health was conducted by CWEGE/AMMACHI Labs (Amrita University), Vision Without Borders, and the MA Math Charitable Trust of Kenya, with enthusiastic support from local government and parliament officials.

This pilot program, which coincided with a Cataract Surgery Camp scheduled for the week of October 6, 2024, focused on empowering women in remote areas by equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and tools to detect early signs of eye diseases. The program seeks to improve overall eye health in the region by preemptively reducing vision impairment through community-based education and outreach.

Twenty-seven participants, including men and women, attended the inaugural session, learning about eye anatomy, common eye conditions, and available treatment options. They also received training in early disease detection and strategies for conducting effective community outreach, preparing them to raise awareness of eye care in their villages.

Following this successful training, the newly trained participants returned to their communities, ready to share critical information on eye health and encourage residents to participate in future screening camps.

With these initiatives underway, the future looks bright—not only empowering individuals with new skills but also fostering a healthier, more informed community with a vision for a brighter tomorrow.
