AMMACHI Labs has devised an innovative training method for L&T, India’s largest construction and engineering company. For a fast growing and evolving industry like the construction industry, the need for skilled labor is paramount and Larsen and Tubro Construction (L&T) is playing a key role in training opportunities. The L&T Construction Skills Training Institute, Kanchipuram, hosts haptic simulators developed at Amrita University’s AMMACHI Labs and  and was formally inaugurated at on Oct 26, 2015 in the presence of key leaders in the construction skill-training field. Since the inauguration, the institute has begun hands on training in core construction skills to students who are enjoying the experience.

The rebar-bending simulator offers a safe and accurate way for trainees to learn and master the manual task of bending rebars. While traditional methods lack accuracy, cause wastage of materials and present safety hazards, the AMMACHI Labs solution increases productivity and gives trainees innumerable opportunities to perfect their skill in a safe and controlled way. The pipe-cutting simulator can safely train people in various cutting techniques and can simulate many tools. In its endeavor to meaningfully equip and empower the country’s skill sector, AMMACHI Labs is piloting this as well as other innovative techniques for training in the construction and manufacturing sectors.

Vice President and Head of the L&T ECC Division, M.V. Satish cut the ribbon while Mr. Niranjan Simha, L&T ECC Project Director – airport, Mr. P.M. Saravanan, Head-Construction Skills Training Department, Dr. M.V. Venkatesan, Principal L&T CSTI Kanchipuram, Mr. V.S. Ramana, and Mr. G. Murugesh looked on.

Prof. Gayathri Manikutty and Anirudh Muraleedharan, researchers from AMMACHI Labs, were present for the inauguration. There were joined by Arun Kumar, Director and Vice President – Asia & Pacific Operations, Omnex Inc. “This inauguration is indeed a significant milestone for both L&T CSTI and AMMACHI Labs. It has opened doors for active inclusion of haptics guidance based simulators in vocational training and L&T is collaborating with Amrita University in pioneering this effort in India.” added Gayathri Manikutty. Prof Bhavani, Director of AMMACHI Labs was delighted by this new venture and remarked “This is a new beginning in vocational skill training in the construction sector.”
