Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu, February 1st to February 20th, 2025, a dedicated team of MSW students from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in Arasampalayam undertook an impactful 20-day field visit to six coastal villages in Ramanathapuram as part of the Amrita Ocean Farming Project. Their engagement with local communities played a pivotal role in advancing ongoing projects and initiatives focused on marine conservation and sustainable livelihoods.
Key Highlights of the Initiative:
Community Awareness Sessions: The students conducted educational sessions on marine conservation, seaweed farming, seagrass restoration, and sustainable practices, benefiting villagers across six locations.
Environmental Clean-Up Drives: Efforts to promote hygiene, waste management, and environmental responsibility were undertaken to improve coastal sustainability.
Digital Literacy Workshops: Local fisherfolk received training in essential tech skills, including weather monitoring, navigation, and communication tools, enhancing their resilience and safety at sea.
School Outreach Programs: Awareness sessions in local schools emphasized responsible marine resource management and substance abuse prevention, fostering environmental consciousness among young minds.
Data Collection & Socio-Economic Analysis: The students gathered valuable insights into the prevailing socio-economic conditions and patterns of marine resource use to inform future interventions.
Through their unwavering dedication to community engagement, the students, alongside field staff and local residents, strengthened collective efforts toward marine conservation. The initiative deepened the understanding of local needs and reinforced the university’s commitment to fostering sustainable livelihoods.
