Ocean Farming Milestone: IMTA Inauguration at Munaikadu

Munaikadu, Rameshwaram | August 18, 2025 – A landmark step towards sustainable coastal livelihoods was achieved with the inauguration of the Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) system in Munaikadu village, Rameshwaram. The initiative marks a new chapter in ocean-based community development, placing women at the forefront of climate-resilient aquaculture.

Inauguration Ceremony

The event was led by Shri R. Sivakumar, Assistant Director of Fisheries, Mandapam, in the presence of Dr. Avigdor Abelson (Adjunct Professor, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham), Dr. Shalini Mathur (Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham), and members of the AMMACHI Labs team.

As part of the program, 20 women and their families received two fish cages, 20 seaweed rafts, and seeds for fish, mussels, and oysters—providing them with the tools to begin cultivating diverse marine species. The ceremony opened with prayer, introductions, and a warm welcome, followed by inspiring addresses by the dignitaries.

Voices of Leadership

  • Shri Sivakumar highlighted the crucial role of women in pioneering sustainable livelihoods. He urged the community to value the resources provided and fondly acknowledged Amma’s vision for women’s empowerment.

  • Dr. Avigdor Abelson emphasized IMTA as a sustainable approach to aquaculture, encouraging women to view it not only as a livelihood but also as an opportunity for leadership and long-term ecological stewardship.

Why IMTA?

Local fishing communities, facing declining fish catches, had approached Chancellor Amma with their concerns. In response, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has been co-designing a scalable and replicable IMTA model that sustains livelihoods while restoring marine ecosystems.

By cultivating fish, mussels, oysters, and seaweed together, IMTA mirrors natural ecosystems—reducing waste, enhancing productivity, and fostering climate-resilient coastal economies. Importantly, the initiative empowers women to take active leadership roles in ocean farming.

Closing with Gratitude

The event concluded with heartfelt thanks to the women beneficiaries, local supporters, and all contributors who helped build the cages and rafts. The day ended with the sharing of prasad, symbolizing blessings for a prosperous and sustainable journey ahead.
