Youth Awareness Drives Mark Lead-Up to International Mangrove Day 2025

Tamil Nadu, India – July 7–8, 2025 : In the lead-up to International Mangrove Day, observed globally on July 26, AMMACHI Labs organized a series of early awareness sessions to highlight the vital role of mangrove ecosystems in protecting our environment. These sessions were held in Olaikuda on July 7 and Soliyakudi Village on July 8, engaging local school students in hands-on environmental education.

International Mangrove Day, established by UNESCO in 2015, is a reminder of the indispensable role mangroves play in coastal resilience, marine biodiversity, and climate change mitigation. As natural barriers, mangroves protect coastlines from storm surges and erosion, provide breeding grounds for countless marine species, and capture large amounts of atmospheric carbon—making them frontline defenders against global warming.

Fostering Environmental Stewardship Among Youth

During the interactive sessions, students learned about:

  • 🌊 Mangroves as storm shields that prevent flooding and land loss

  • 🐟 Mangroves as marine nurseries, supporting fish and other aquatic species

  • 🌱 Mangroves as carbon sinks, crucial for climate action

The sessions sparked enthusiasm among the youth, who participated in discussions, visual demonstrations, and storytelling exercises centered on the importance of preserving coastal ecosystems.

By raising awareness and encouraging student involvement, AMMACHI Labs aims to nurture a new generation of environmental stewards committed to the conservation of nature’s most powerful protectors.

Let’s protect what protects us.
