Wayanad, Kerala – June 10, 2025: In a moving display of compassion and resilience, students from landslide-affected communities in Wayanad came together as part of the Life Enrichment Education (LEE) program under the Amrita Sustainable Livelihoods and Disaster Resilience initiative to clean and restore a local graveyard—one that holds the memories of many who lost their lives during past natural disasters.
The graveyard, a resting place for numerous victims of devastating landslides, had gradually fallen into neglect, especially in areas where entire families had perished, leaving behind no relatives to maintain the site. Touched by this reality, the students proposed and led a heartfelt effort to bring dignity back to the forgotten spaces.
Armed with simple tools, a powerful sense of purpose, and the encouragement of their mentors, the youth cleared the grounds and planted saplings as living memorials—symbols of peace, remembrance, and renewal. What began as a community clean-up quickly transformed into an act of love, healing, and spiritual restoration.
“For a long time, we wanted to do this. But it was through the strength and support we gained from the LEE sessions that we found the courage to step forward,” shared one of the participating students.
The event concluded with a Sarvamatha (All-Faith) prayer, led by local religious leaders, bringing together people across faiths in a solemn moment of unity and reflection. Leaders and devotees from the M.A. Math Ashrams in Meppadi and Mananthavady, along with local Ward Members, joined the gathering, offering blessings and moral support.
This initiative stands as a powerful example of youth-led transformation—where education, empathy, and community spirit converge to heal and rebuild not only spaces, but hearts.
