On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we thought we’d share one of the ways Amma is working to empower and educate young women to protect them from becoming victims of human trafficking. Amma is deeply committed to helping to end human trafficking and other forms of modern slavery, and to using technology to benefit, empower and protect disadvantaged populations, as described in their mission statement in one of their recent posts. In keeping with that commitment, our own Amrita University has developed an interactive software called Smart Decisions from software depot, designed to help users avoid becoming victims of human trafficking.
Our team went to Idukki, Kerala to pilot the Smart Decisions software with school students as part of our Amrita Ambassador program for adolescent girls. The Power of the Adolescent Girl is brought forth in this program as it trains and empowers these girls to spread awareness on important topics like stranger awareness, human trafficking, and adolescent health for girls to the entire school and the village community.
The team met separately with 11th grade boys and girls at Bison Valley Government Higher Secondary School and discussed mobile and internet safety as well as human trafficking awareness. The adolescent girl Ambassadors then held a discussion session with 8th and 9th grade girls and boys on safe mobile usage. They shared stories and other tips to stay safe and be wary of strangers. We continue to mentor the Amrita Ambassadors and help them plan monthly activities as they work to share their newfound knowledge with their families and villages, slowly spreading awareness about human trafficking and how to stay safe throughout their entire community, so that no one in their village will fall prey to traffickers.
