October 26-27, 2024 , This week, the women of the Thiruppalaikkudi Seaweed Cultivation Group made significant progress toward their seaweed harvest goals by acquiring 800 kg of Kappaphycus seeds and preparing them for growth. Each seed was meticulously attached to ropes, which were then secured to poles within the sea, marking the beginning of the cultivation process. This hands-on effort exemplifies the group’s commitment to sustainable and profitable seaweed farming.
The optimal period for seaweed growth in Kerala starts in late October, extending through November. Seaweeds, such as Kappaphycus, are fast-growing macroalgae and typically reach harvest maturity within two months. Building on this week’s success, the group plans to procure additional seeds and expand the planting efforts over the next few weeks.
