Two Weeks of Ocean Farming Progress in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu, September 2025 — AMMACHI Labs’ Ocean Farming initiative has made remarkable progress over the past two weeks, guided by marine ecologist and Adjunct Professor at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Dr. Avigdor Abelson. The program continues to blend scientific innovation with community empowerment, equipping coastal women with vital skills in ocean-based livelihoods.

Key Highlights:

🤿 Snorkeling Training
For many participants, this was their first experience with snorkeling. Overcoming initial hesitation and fear of the sea, the women learned to handle snorkeling gear and confidently explored underwater environments.

🏊 Swimming with Experts
The team had the unique opportunity to train with Akhilesh, a former Olympic swimmer from Finland, and Priya Lorenz, a filmmaker. Akhilesh provided professional swimming instruction, helping women gain confidence in the water, while Priya created a safe and encouraging space. Even those with little to no prior swimming experience learned to float and swim independently.

🪸 Underwater Cultivation
The initiative advanced its Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) system by collecting and planting Caulerpa samples on stones and in net bags. Ulva cultivation rafts were deployed in Sambai, with additional seaweed resources distributed to women in Olaikuda, further expanding community participation.

🐟 IMTA Deployment
Two IMTA cages were successfully installed, housing 2,000 fishes, 30 mussels, 30 oysters, and indigenous seaweed varieties. While mussels faced adaptation challenges, oysters are thriving and seaweed growth will be closely monitored. The women of Munekad especially enjoyed participating in the fish-feeding activities.

Empowerment Through Sustainability

Beyond aquaculture, these activities symbolize resilience and empowerment. Women are not only learning essential ocean skills but are also gaining confidence in navigating marine environments—transforming challenges into sustainable livelihood opportunities.
