October 8th, 2024, members of AMMACHI Labs ventured into the field to visit various aquaculture locations in Kerala, engaging with industry experts involved in seaweed cultivation, mussel farming, and shrimp cultivation.
The team began their day at the Kollam Fisheries Department, followed by visits to nearby farms where they gathered crucial information on mussel farming practices. They had the opportunity to interact with local farmers and discuss the challenges they face in the region. A key meeting took place with Smitha Gopalan, Matsyabhavan Officer at Kollam Corporation, who provided further insights into the local industry and its operations.
In Kureephuza, the team met Varghese, an experienced and passionate mussel farmer who graciously offered a tour of his farm. His extensive knowledge and deep commitment to aquaculture were evident throughout the conversation, leaving a lasting impression on the AMMACHI Labs team.
Later in the afternoon, the team visited a farm near Munroe Island owned by shrimp cultivation expert Mr. Sumesh. He gave them a detailed overview of his methods for growing and managing shrimp, offering the team a comprehensive understanding of the intricacies involved in this form of aquaculture.
This field visit provided AMMACHI Labs with valuable insights into Kerala’s aquaculture sector and the dedication of the farmers working within it.
