October 28-29, 2024 , Photos from the recent field visits by AMMACHI Labs’ Aquaculture team offer a glimpse into their ongoing research into sustainable aquaculture practices. The team’s latest research took them to various farms across Kollam and the Ashtamudi Lake region, where they studied local techniques in mussel and shrimp farming to better understand regional practices and challenges.
On October 28th, the team returned to Kureepuzha, where Mr. Varghese shared a detailed walkthrough of his green mussel cultivation techniques, guiding the team through each stage, from seed procurement to farm setup. His insights into the challenges and innovations of local aquaculture provided the team with valuable knowledge.
The team later visited farms in the Ashtamudi Lake region that cultivate the local Pearl Spot fish, Etroplus Suratensis, or “Karimeen,” and shrimp, gathering further insights into the unique practices that support these aquaculture efforts.
On October 29th, the team spent the day in Allappad, observing the cultivation of Ulva seaweed and noting the area’s rich oyster population. These findings highlight the region’s biodiversity and underscore the potential for sustainable aquaculture development in these areas.
