AMMACHI Labs Conducts Baseline Surveys for Marine Biodiversity and Habitat Conservation in Coastal Tamil Nadu

November 7, 2024 – AMMACHI Labs’ Global Environmental Facility team, along with a group of visiting international experts, conducted baseline surveys in the villages of Dhamodhara Pattinam and Nambuthalai. This field visit aimed to gather valuable insights into the region’s marine biodiversity, ecological challenges, and socio-economic factors impacting local communities, particularly in relation to seagrass and marine habitat conservation.

In Dhamodhara Pattinam, discussions with local fishermen revealed a rich biodiversity in the area, including frequent sightings of jellyfish and rabbit fish, with flourishing seagrass beds located 6–7 kilometers offshore. In Nambuthalai, the team observed active seaweed farming, engaging with women cultivators who shared their experiences, challenges, and cycles of harvest.

Water samples were collected from both sites for further analysis, while comprehensive assessments with community members provided deeper insights into their interactions with the marine environment. The team concluded the day with an interactive discussion on their observations and explored possible solutions to address the challenges identified.

This survey marks an important step in AMMACHI Labs’ commitment to promoting sustainable practices and conservation efforts within coastal communities.
