Ervadi, Ramanathapuram District, November 8, 2024 –
Researchers from AMMACHI Labs’ Center for Women’s Empowerment & Gender Equality (CWEGE) embarked on an insightful field trip to Ervadi in Ramanathapuram District on Friday, as part of their ongoing study on sustainable aquaculture and women’s empowerment.
The day commenced with a warm reception at the Ramanathapuram Fisherman Sangham Federation, hosted by CEO Mr. Arumugan and his team. During the discussions, the researchers gained valuable insights into the current trends, opportunities, and challenges of seaweed cultivation and harvesting in the region. The interactive session highlighted the significant role of seaweed in local livelihoods and its potential as a sustainable resource.
The visit extended to the village, where the team engaged directly with locals to better understand their experiences and challenges. Later, the researchers ventured onto the water, collecting various seaweed samples for testing and further analysis. This hands-on approach aims to deepen their understanding of seaweed diversity in the region and explore innovative methods to enhance cultivation practices.
The field trip reflects AMMACHI Labs’ commitment to fostering sustainable practices and empowering coastal communities through research and collaboration. Further studies are expected to shed light on ways to integrate gender equality and economic resilience into the aquaculture sector.
