Sambai & Munekad Villages, Kerala –June 11, 2025: Members of AMMACHI Labs were in the field on June 11th, engaging with coastal women and youth as part of their ongoing commitment to sustainable livelihoods and community empowerment. The day was marked by hands-on learning, joyful participation, and a deep sense of purpose, as teams visited women ocean farmers in Sambai village and students of the Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) program in nearby Munekad.
The morning began at Sambai village with swimming lessons—an essential skill for women engaged in ocean-based livelihoods. For many, this was their first experience in the water. With only two women having prior swimming experience, the session focused on building confidence through basic floating techniques and a demonstration on how to properly wear diving masks. The training blended safety with empowerment, encouraging the women to step out of their comfort zones. Laughter and enthusiasm filled the air as the group embraced each moment with determination and unity.
Later in the day, the AMMACHI Labs team traveled to Munekad village to meet with participants of the IMTA initiative. Through interactive discussions, the team explored how combining the cultivation of different species—such as seaweed, mussels, and fish—can create a balanced and eco-friendly aquaculture system. This innovative approach allows each species to play a role in supporting the others, creating a sustainable and efficient marine farming model.
The importance of swimming skills was once again emphasized, linking physical readiness with technical training for safe and effective participation in marine-based vocations.
These field visits highlight AMMACHI Labs’ holistic approach to community development—combining skill-building, environmental sustainability, and the empowerment of women in coastal regions. Through continued engagement and hands-on support, AMMACHI Labs is helping create resilient, self-reliant communities poised to thrive in harmony with the ocean.
