Women-Led Victory in Uttar Pradesh: Sarai Nooruddinpur Says No to Liquor Shop

Uttar Pradesh – June 16, 2025 — In a remarkable triumph of grassroots activism, the women of Sarai Nooruddinpur village in Uttar Pradesh have successfully led the closure of a liquor shop that had long disrupted peace and threatened community well-being. This powerful campaign, rooted in unity and driven by sheer determination, reflects the transformative impact of women’s leadership and community empowerment.

The movement began on April 21st as part of a LEE (Life Enrichment Education) Community Event organized by Amrita SeRVe, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham’s flagship rural development program. Concerned about the adverse effects of the liquor shop on families and youth, the women took action — filing multiple complaints with local police authorities and raising their voices through the 1076 public grievance helpline.

Supported by the Gram Pradhan, members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and the larger village community, their advocacy gained momentum. Their persistence paid off when, after nearly two months of coordinated efforts, the liquor shop was officially shut down on June 16, 2025.

The streets of Sarai Nooruddinpur came alive in celebration as slogans of empowerment echoed throughout the village:

  • “Mahila Ekta Zindabad!”

  • “Nari Shakti Zindabad!”

  • “Mahila Ekta ke samne prashasan bhi fail!”

This victory is more than the removal of a single establishment — it is a symbol of women’s collective strength, demonstrating that when united, rural women can challenge entrenched issues and demand change for the betterment of their communities.

The success of Sarai Nooruddinpur stands as a model of participatory governance and grassroots activism, reaffirming Amrita SeRVe’s mission to nurture self-reliant, thriving rural communities across India.
