Mandapam, Tamil Nadu – August 16, 2025: The AMMACHI Labs Ocean Farming team had an inspiring day filled with learning, collaboration, and community engagement as part of their ongoing efforts to build sustainable livelihoods and protect marine ecosystems.
Highlights from the Day
Snorkeling Lessons with Dr. Avigdor
The day began with hands-on snorkeling lessons led by Dr. Avigdor Abelson, renowned marine ecologist and Adjunct Professor at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. Team members learned the essentials of floating, breathing, and moving confidently in the water. His patient guidance and enthusiasm turned the session into an empowering and unforgettable experience.
MTA Cage Inspection
At the ocean farming site, mussels and oysters brought from Kerala were carefully transferred into the Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) cage. Currently, one cage housing approximately 1,000 fishes has been installed. Maintenance activities are scheduled, with net cleaning in 15 days and full replacement in 25 days. Plans are also underway for raft installation and the addition of a second cage within the week.
Community Engagement with Women Beneficiaries
The team met with 20 local women to emphasize the importance of swimming as a vital safety skill in ocean farming. Dr. Abelson introduced the women to the IMTA model, explaining how their active involvement directly supports sustainable, climate-resilient livelihoods.
Why IMTA?
By cultivating multiple species—such as fish, mussels, oysters, and seaweed—together in one system, IMTA mimics natural ecosystems, reduces waste, and enhances productivity. This integrated approach not only supports ocean health but also creates new avenues for women’s economic empowerment.

The Ocean Farming projects are implemented by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, in collaboration with Transworld, GEF Small Grants Programme – Operational Phase 7, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India, and TERI – The Energy and Resources Institute.
