The AMMACHI Labs Global Environmental Facility (GEF) team conducted a three-day research field trip from November 9th to 11th, 2024, visiting Pudupattinam Thondi, Puthukudi Thondi, Thirupalaikudy, Sambhai, and Olaikuda. The visits aimed to observe ongoing seaweed and shrimp farming operations, connect with local seaweed farmers, and engage with women previously trained by AMMACHI Labs in seaweed cultivation and harvesting.
A warm welcome awaited the team in Olaikuda and Thirupalaikudy, where the women from prior training sessions expressed enthusiasm and gratitude for the visit. They were eager to share updates on their progress and sought advice on enhancing cultivation techniques. Their commitment to expanding their farms and improving yields was evident in their proactive engagement with the team.
In Thondi, women farmers showcased their successful seaweed farming operations and discussed aspirations to venture into value-added products derived from seaweed. Their interest in learning advanced processing and marketing techniques highlighted their determination to boost their incomes and create sustainable livelihoods.
This field trip reflects AMMACHI Labs’ ongoing efforts to empower coastal communities through skill development, knowledge sharing, and fostering sustainable economic growth. The engagement with these women farmers underscores the potential of collaborative initiatives to bring transformative changes in rural livelihoods.
