AMMACHI Labs Strengthens Rural Livelihoods Through Livestock and Agricultural Initiatives

July 28, 2025 – AMMACHI Labs’ Wadi team continues its dedicated fieldwork, championing sustainable rural development across Odisha through a range of livestock and agricultural interventions. Their recent efforts reflect a deep commitment to improving community resilience through better farming and animal husbandry practices.

Livestock Development in Rajang and Chadoi Villages

In Rajang and Chadoi, new goat shelters featuring bamboo flooring and walls have been completed, while others are nearing completion. At Rajang, the Goat Rearing Group (GRG) met to discuss local sourcing of goats, with guidance and oversight provided by a visiting District Development Manager. A key milestone was the successful vaccination of all mother goats and kids under six months against PPR (Peste des Petits Ruminants), a highly contagious and fatal disease affecting goats.

Agricultural Progress in Kanaka, Tantichira, Bramhaniapal, and Asanabania

Across these Wadis, a variety of sustainable farming practices are being implemented:

  • Soil and Plant Health: Farmers in Kanaka and Asanabania have adopted the double-ring method around plants to enhance water retention, while vermicompost was applied and distributed to enrich soil fertility.

  • Tree Protection: Tree guards were both newly installed and repaired in Kanaka and Tantichira to ensure the survival of saplings.

  • Crop Diversification: Intercropping of sweet potato has begun in Tantichira to make efficient use of farmland and improve yield.

  • Community Engagement: At Kanaka, a meeting led by the Community Resource Person (CRP) focused on optimizing intercropping techniques and preparing for upcoming gap-filling activities.

  • Soil Moisture Conservation: Bramhaniapal farmers practiced mulching to protect soil health and conserve moisture.

These initiatives are part of AMMACHI Labs’ Goat Husbandry and Wadi projects, implemented by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham with support from NABARD Online.

The integrated approach to animal care and sustainable agriculture is designed to empower rural communities with tools and knowledge to build long-term economic and environmental resilience.
