Thondi Village, Tamil Nadu – July 17, 2025 : In a heartening demonstration of community-led conservation, AMMACHI Labs’ Ocean Farming Team returned to Thondi Village on July 17, 2025, to further its seagrass restoration initiative—this time with deepened local engagement and shared environmental stewardship.
The visit focused not only on ecological restoration but also on mobilizing community participation, with five women and four men from the village joining the planting effort. Following an engaging awareness session on the importance of seagrasses in marine ecosystems, participants received hands-on training in sustainable planting techniques using stitched jute bag pockets and biodegradable paper cups.
Seagrass Planting with Purpose
During the activity, the team and local volunteers successfully planted 200 units, each containing 4–5 seagrass shoots, restoring approximately 0.07 hectares of seabed. The women participants, in particular, showed remarkable enthusiasm and precision in preparing and transplanting the planting units, reaffirming their role as leaders in local environmental action.
Seagrasses play a critical role in:
-
Storing carbon and mitigating climate change
-
Protecting shorelines from erosion
-
Providing habitat for marine biodiversity
-
Improving water quality
These underwater meadows are among the most productive and valuable ecosystems on Earth—and restoring them requires both scientific technique and community spirit.
A Shared Commitment to Nature
The event concluded with light refreshments and a reflection on the interdependence between humanity and nature. The team shared a quote by Amma that resonated with all present:
“When humanity serves Nature, Nature serves humanity. When we serve animals and plants, they too serve us in return.”
This message served as a reminder that conservation is a shared responsibility—and that when we care for the planet, the planet cares for us.
