Talk by Paralympic Gold Medalist Karen Darke at Campus

January 25, 2024 – Amrita University and AMMACHI Labs welcomed British paralympic Gold Medalist Karen  Darke  to give a talk at the Amritapuri Campus.

Ms.  Darke is a para-cycling athlete, adventurer and author. Her talk was exceptionally inspiring. Paralysed from the chest down following an accident whilst sea cliff climbing when she was 21, she explained in her talk how after going through a deep depression, she empowered herself with inner strength and decided to overcome her handicaps with challenges starting in 1996 when she hand-cycled across the Himalaya. She explained in details her other feats: Hand-cycling the Indian Himalaya in 2005 & 2018, the Tibetan Plateau in 2014, sea kayaking from Canada to Alaska in 2012,  crossing Greenland’s ice cap whilst sitting on skis using her arms in 2006, climbing the Mont Blanc, etc.

Her biggest deeds were winning the 2016 Rio Paralympics Gold Medal in the Women’s road time trial, following the Silver Medal she won in the same discipline 4 years earlier at the 2012 London Paralympics.
