Dr. Bhavani Rao Advocates Gender Equality at International Conference

May 8, 2024 , Bangkok, Thailand – Dr. Bhavani Rao, a prominent figure in gender studies and women’s empowerment, recently participated as a panelist at the conference “Shaping Research Agenda of the Social and Human Sciences in Asia-Pacific.” The event, held in collaboration with UNESCO and the Association of Asian Social Science Research Councils (#AASSREC), convened scholars and experts from across the region to discuss critical issues facing society.

Dr. Rao’s contribution to the conference centered on the theme “Enacting Gender Equality with Gender Studies.” Alongside esteemed figures such as Eunsong Kim from UNESCO’s New Delhi Regional Office and Prof. Rosselle Leah K. Rivera from the University of the Philippines, Dr. Rao addressed key aspects of gender equality and cultural dynamics in India. Her insights delved into the imperative of involving men and boys in initiatives aimed at achieving gender parity.

During her presentation, Dr. Rao showcased the groundbreaking work conducted by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham’s Center for Women’s Empowerment & Gender Equality (#CWEGE), in conjunction with UNESCO Chair. She highlighted their contributions to research, academic discourse, and recent field projects with India’s Central Reserve Police Force and Telangana State Special Police, emphasizing the practical applications of gender studies in real-world contexts.

The conference served as a platform for scholars, policymakers, and advocates to exchange ideas, share best practices, and chart a course for inclusive and progressive research agendas in the social and human sciences.
